SympTech is designed to ensure the symptoms patient experience are recognised and treated
SympTech uses Holistic Self Reporting Surveys to ensures staff at the bedside know what is important to patients that day.
SympTech uses reporting tools ensure staff at the bedside are able to ask for help if they want to improve the symptoms their patients are experience
SympTech's reporting tools ensure hospitals and health systems are able to monitor the effectiveness of the symptom management processes they implement
For a number of years the team focused on improving the ability of patients in ICU to communicate. Working with patients, relatives, nurses, speech and language specialists, rehabilitation experts and doctors; with developed myICUvoice. We realised the all patients in hospital at times find it difficult to be heard or to find the words to express how they feel
We showed myICUvoice as a communication tool improved the ability of non-verbal patients to communicate and that this reduce their stress and fear. Like all communication tools, they are only useful if they are given to patients to use. The data system developed in Cambridge demonstrated that the tool wasn't used as often as nurses reported to us so the real benefit to patients was being realised- we asked an anthropologist to find out why.
After developing a tool that we know works when given to patients, we redesigned the system to also help nurses and hospitals care for patients.
We call this system...
Currently in selected centres only, SympTech combines myICUvoice with back-end technologies that allows clinicians to continuously monitor, quantify and evaluate, in real-time, their patients' symptoms and experiences in ICU. Our system also allows us to continuously evaluate best practices in symptom management in peri-operative care for both individuals as well as hospitals.
SympTech is designed to ensure patient experience is a central focus in day to day patient care.
More about myICUvoice....
Using touch screen technology, myICUvoice is a new software system designed specifically for an ICU context. It acts as a symptom management and communication tool for ICU patients, their families and clinicians.
We have shown that the use of myICUvoice significantly decreases levels of stress and anxiety for patients, and it also helps to detectand communicate symptoms that otherwise would not have been detected. For physically weak, voiceless and ventilated patients the simple symptom selection tools combined with type to-speak functions are now an integral part of our care.
